VEGAS THRILLS AT HOME OPENER, 34-24 OVER GREEN BAY

(LAS VEGAS, Nevada – May 20, 2014)

As the field was being laid down inside Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Center, there was a different mood in the sense in the air. Different because the Vegas Sin franchise was in a new home, with a new head coach and nearly a complete overhaul of its 2013 roster.

The early season results have been impressive, a team that was going through a rebuilding year and not much was expected from, sit at 1-1 following two great games to start the 2014 season. Despite the 42-14 blowout versus Los Angeles, Vegas showed signs of what it can do on both sides of the ball.

Entering its home opener, confidence ran high with this Tui Suiauona led team that now included names in Sindy Cummings, Markie Henderson, Cynthia Schmidt and other previously unknowns. The internal and league turmoil of previous seasons involving the Vegas Sin also seem to be a distant memory. In Tui Suiaunoa, Quarterback Sindy Cummings and the staple of this franchise Danika Brace have seem to erase names that were ridden in controversy and negativity like former coaches Dion Lee and Jeremiah Captain as well as former quarterback Nikki Johnson. The Vegas Sin DNA now is very much so a ‘can do’ and positive attitude which has delivered results on the field.

This past Thursday night, it was evident that Vegas now not only had a quarterback in Sindy Cummings who has a strong arm, but one that was not afraid to take the big hit, which was a major criticism of former quarterback Nikki Johnson who many believed lacked the physical toughness. Cummings now leads an offense that has shown great efficiency with Markie Henderson as its featured running back and perhaps the biggest surprise story of 2014, the emergence of Cynthia Schmidt at wide receiver.

Before the 1st quarter was done, Vegas had two touchdowns on the board with a Kia Ramos 5yd run and a Cynthia Schmidt 6yd touchdown reception from Cummings. Green Bay did finally respond with only :14 seconds remaining the 1st with a Jessica Peyton 2yd run to make the score 13-6. It was clear the only offense Green Bay was going to have on this night, was #2, Jessica Peyton who has become a playmaker from the quarterback position.

Green Bay made the game interesting after a 3 play 22 yard scoring drive in the 2nd quarter that running back Amber mane capped on a 2yd touchdown run to bring Green Bay within 1, at 13-12 at halftime.

This Chill roster is another team that had low expectations from the 2014 season with the loss of Green Bay legend, Anne ‘Showtime’ Erler. However, Green Bay rallied late against Seattle in its season-opener and after one half football, was only down 1pt on the road vs. Vegas.

The only scoring of the 3rd Quarter was a surprise, as defensive stud middle linebacker Danika Brace made an impact on the offensive side of the ball hauling in a 21yd touchdown pass from Cummings to take a 20-12 lead.

The 4th Quarter, fireworks started exploding as both offenses tested the Thomas & Mack scoreboards, scoring a combined 4 touchdowns. Vegas’ scores featured a 4yd touchdown pass to Cynthia Schmidt her 2nd score of the night and Sindy Cummings taking in a 3yd touchdown run. For Green Bay, it was two unlikely sources in Kara Alexander who scored on a 6yd touchdown run and Stephany Ponzer who brought in a 17yd touchdown pass from Peyton. The Ponzer touchdown pass brought the game to within reach for Green Bay at 24-27 with only 1:22 remaining in the game.

The ensuing onside kickoff was recovered by Vegas and the Sin never looked back en route to a 34-24 key Western Conference win. In the days following, the Sin have become a fan favorite in Vegas with a lot of media buzz following the new-look team.

Vegas is now tied with Los Angeles at 1-1 and trails a 1-0 Seattle and a 1-0 Chicago. Green Bay will try to save their season as they finally return home on June 14 to face Los Angeles while Vegas has a monster match-up on July 3rd vs Chicago in Vegas.
