GREEN BAY CHILL SCORE HISTORICAL FIRST WIN 36-34 IN DRAMATIC FASHION
Bridgeview, Ill. (LFL360.com) — The Green Bay Chill captured their first-ever franchise win in dramatic fashion as quarterback and Game MVP Anne Erler and wide receiver Katie Zellner provided the late heroics to vault the visitors to a 36-34 win over the Chicago Bliss in an supercharged atmosphere before an electric crowd.
Erler, who led the Chill to sustained drives throughout the evening, sometimes on her own, connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 remaining in the contest to break a 28-28 tie, stunning the hometown crowd. But just as important was the successful two-point conversion, as Erler connected with Jessica Peyton to increase the visitors’ lead to 8. Chicago responded 16 seconds later as Heather Furr rushed for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:09 remaining, however, could not ultimately connect with wide receiver Laura Petersen on the two-point try, forcing an onside kick attempt that failed and lifted the Chill to victory.
Trailing 28-14, a desperate Chicago team found their groove behind Furr and running back ChrisDell Harris to rally and ultimately tie the game as the former found Emily Greiner for a two yard score with five minutes remaining.
Green Bay was powered by Anne Erler early on, as she accounted for three rushing touchdowns to spark the visitors early . Running back Melissa De Jesus was effectively early as well, scoring an early two point conversion as well as on a two-yard scamper five-minutes into the second half to extend the lead to 14.
The evening started out looking like a Bliss night, as ChrisDell Harris scored on Chicago’s first drive 2:54 into the game and Heather Furr answered Green Bay’s early charge to extend their advantage to 14-8 late in the second half.
Chicago possessed a more efficient offense, totaling 199 total yards on 27 plays, thirteen fewer than Green Bay, who managed 159 total yards. But the key to the game clearly were turnovers, as Chicago lost a key fumble late, with Laura Petersen unable to maintain possession deep in Bliss territory to set up the game-winning drive, accounting for the Bliss’ fourth fumble of the night (three lost).
Green Bay now sets their sights on a late season match-up with the Las Vegas Sin as Chicago travels to Minnesota in hopes of staying alive in the Western Conference playoff race.
