Former Mist QB expected to challenge Moon for starting spot beginning with April 22 open tryout.

When former Seattle Mist QB Angela Rypien announced due to family and new opportunities that she was moving to the east coast and interested in joining the LFL’s Baltimore Charm, the news excited not only Angela and the Charm, but Baltimore’s loyal fan base as well. In fact, the odds that the city’s fan base will expand just shot up as Rypien is the daughter of former Washington Redskins Super Bowl MVP QB Mark Rypien, with DC located just down Interstate 95 from Baltimore.

Charm head coach Rick Reeder heard the news like anyone else and is just as excited:

Reeder: “My reaction was like WOW! Not much more I can say. All it does for Baltimore is improve our team. The skill that she brings is that she has been worked with by great coaches and I’m sure that her dad has been working with her as well. She has a strong arm and height; it’s a plus in any league when you can see the field. We are ready to get her ready for anything on the field as we do with all of our players in Baltimore. We want the best and demand it, so I expect the same from her.”

At the same time, Reeder is not guaranteeing anything to Rypien and has a veteran QB in Stacy Moon that he continues to have faith in, meaning Angela will have to earn her way onto the team and compete for a starting position:

Reeder: “I see her playing quarterback, but she will have to earn that spot. I’m not going to give anyone anything. No one on Baltimore has a set spot on the field. All the QB’s in Baltimore will be working for a spot on the field, all will have to show me that you want to be on the field more then the other person working for that same spot. Meaning, extra time in the gym, film room, chalk talk and fundamental work (foot work and throwing routes).”

Angela realizes there won’t be a red carpet out for her arrival and while she has heard good things about the team, she is not taking anything for granted and plans to bring her “A” game to the tryouts on April 22nd:

Rypien: “I have heard great things, and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of it all!   They have an amazing off-season schedule and seem to have all the right tools in place. I work hard and have learned a lot about being on the field over the past year.   I hope my passion for the game and drive for success will compliment the great energy that they already have going with the team.”

The Charm will need all the help they can get if they plan to make the playoffs and unseat the Philadelphia Passion from their spot atop the Eastern Conference of the LFL. Both Coach Reeder and Rypien are looking forward to that challenge:

Reeder: “All of this year’s additions that I have seen so far will help us get past Philly. I have a great deal of respect for Philly, they have a great group of ladies there and a great coaching staff, it will be always tough to beat them no matter what. We are starting a rivalry like in the NFL’s Ravens vs Steelers. So, having a new QB in the mix will help us as long as all QB’s fight for their job and push one another to be great.”

Rypien: “Right now, I’m completely focused on improving my personal performance and training with the team during the offseason. I see myself first as a teammate, and hopefully a leader and motivator!”

In addition, make no bones about it, Reeder is well aware of the attraction that the Rypien name should bring to Baltimore’s neighbors to the south in Washington, and expect their fans to now include more from the District based on the name recognition:

Reeder: “The Rypien name I believe will sell out our arena every game, in my eyes. Mark Rypien was the last QB to win a Super Bowl in Washington DC. We are close to DC,  I believe that we will have fans from DC coming to the games and events. It will be a sight to see when all of this gets started.”

The LFL strongly encourages prospective athletes to come prepared to participate in strength, speed and agility drills.
