The New York Majesty folded after one dismal LFL campaign. The club finished without a victory last season and disappeared into the Gotham night shortly thereafter. Despite the coaching quandaries, football follies, and various lowlights, some of the players who endured the Majesty’s less than stellar reign, have not given up on their dreams. Instead, they are looking to make their mark with other teams this season. Baltimore’s Krystal Gray is a prime example.
Gray served as New York’s signal caller in 2009 and she’s hoping to pilot the Charm this season. The blonde bombshell from Buffalo feels it’s a no-brainer to take another crack at LFL success. “I’m absolutely, 100 percent, head over heels, back in love with this game,” Gray said. As for the Charm City, Gray thinks it’s the perfect place for building a winning tradition. “Our whole team gives it everything we have, every time we step on the field, “ said Gray. “On top of that, we are all getting really close off the field as well.”
One of the main reasons for the Majesty’s woes was the coaching, or lack there of. Gray does not foresee any problems in that area as far as the Charm is concerned. “The coaches will work with anyone on any day of the week,” Gray said. “They are always available to us. Our staff cares about us as individuals. They want us to be successful on the field and in life.” Sounds refreshing. So far, the team as a whole seems to be buying in to the family atmosphere.
The man running the show in Baltimore is Head Coach Rick Reeder. One of his mantras: “You’ve got to learn to be unshakable.” Good advice. Especially for an expansion team that will certainly be chock full of rookies. Many of the green players may do very well in purple however. Brittany Tegeler and Sharon Bowen have been impressive early on. Carol King and Rachel Kagay have shown some flashes of brilliance. Players like Kelly Campbell bring that intangible will and desire to practice day in and day out. Their potential on-field leader sees the makings of winners. According to Gray, many of the rookies have “the desire, drive, and work ethic that the Charm is looking for.” Reeder, his staff, and the Baltimore fan base hope she’s right.
Baltimore is one of two expansion teams in the league this season and that may lower expectations for some. Not Gray. Not even close. “We are here to get better every day and to win,” she said. “If I trust in God, my family, our amazing coaching staff, and my incredible teammates, who are beautiful inside and out, we will make a lot of noise.” It’s hard to argue with one of the hardest working players the LFL has ever seen. So, while it’s true that the team will be playing it’s freshman LFL season, who knows? Maybe in this case, the first time is the charm.
